Facebook

To try and get more of a hype around the trailer, and to get more people to see the things we do and need feedback on, we made a Facebook page for the trailer. Giving us a window between the life of the trailer and the real world. This gave use the chance to really draw an audience in by showing them little teasers of things that are to do with our trailer, but not showing them everything all at once.

Horror Trailer Magazine cover

We made another magazine cover so that it would fit better with how a real film company promotes their trailer, sending it to multiple magazine companies and getting it onto many magazine front covers, the more magazines its on the more likely it is that the film will create an interest in it so that they will make a bigger audience and hype around the film before it comes out so that people will already be waiting to see it and they will be sure that they will make money from the film.

Editing

I have been working on editing the trailer today, and I have almost finished, I just need to change the 'coming soon' to 'Talk to Frank on October 25th' as it links with the trailer because it's all about drugs and Talk to Frank is a well known drugs help line. I also need to add in the logo for the film at the end. But I'm going to put the trailer up tonight so that I can get some feedback now and then make the final changes.

Magazine Cover

More Editing

After putting up what we had of the trailer so far, we got feedback saying we needed to make the story more clear, so we decided to look at trying out putting titles over some of the footage, heres a small screen shot of the work so far, we have decided to go for 'Have you ever been on a trip to hell?' to symbolise the journey of addicts on drugs. I was then thinking, making putting 'I have' after to make it more fitting as this story is of a girl trying to get out of drugs but it all going wrong. I also thought it might work because it makes it more personal and like you are actually following her story, rather than just another random story.

Requiem for a Dream

Synopsis:

Drugs. They consume mind, body and soul. Once you're hooked, you're hooked. Four lives. Four addicts. Four failures. Despite their aspirations of greatness, they succumb to their addictions. Watching the addicts spiral out of control, we bear witness to the dirtiest, ugliest portions of the underworld addicts reside in. It is shocking and eye-opening but demands to be seen by both addicts and non-addicts alike.- Found of IMDB

I decided to watch 'Requiem for a Dream' as it seems to link with the trailer I am making for Media. As it is all to do with taking drugs and the effect on different people. In the film 'Requiem for a Dream' we are mainly shown the affects on a young couple in love and how they slowly deteriorate until it gets to the stage where Marion Silver has to stoop to selling her body to get enough money to get the drugs she needs while Harry Goldfarb has to go all over the country to get the drugs he needs and ends up getting an infection so he cannot return to his home where Marion is waiting for him. It also shows the effects on the mother who is obsessed with getting on a TV show, she turns to a dieting pill that makes her start to go insane and she ends up in hospital while they try and help her. It also follows the life of Harry's friend Tyrone C. Love, who ended up in prison with Harry due to being caught.

Our trailer uses extracts from this film as we include things like showing the effects of drugs with the couple happy and messing around, along with a more violent side where the couple is arguing and shouting at each other and the fact that both our trailer and the film seem to be more of a documentary of the lives rather than a straight up film. However unlike the film we have the added extra of the trailer we are making being a horror with deaths. Personally I found the whole trailer extremely confusing as you never really know what's going on or where the story is going to go because it seems to be a tangled web of the messed up lives of the people involved. All ending with tragedy for each character whether that's hospital, prison or being forced into a life of entertaining men to get enough money to pay for the drugs.

Although I didn't particularly like the film, as I felt it was way too confusing and actually gave me a headache watching it because there was so much happening all the time and it just got extremely confusing. I did still think it showed the affects of drugs well, and made the audience feel as though they where the ones doing drugs too.

Poster

We wanted to make a mysterious looking poster for the trailer so that you couldn't really tell a lot about the image, to create more intrigue into who the two characters are. The way it has been done suggests horror as they are in a dark tunnel with one person running away and the the person having caught them and is trying to drag them back.

Company Logo

We decided to change out company logo as we thought it would be more interesting and would stand out a little more. All copyright of the image goes to JustWithIt on deviantart.

Mood Board

I decided to make a mood board of the things I find scary or creepy, so I have an idea of the sorts of things that are classified as 'Horror'. Most of these are slasher horror which does not really link with our trailer as it's ,ore of a documentary thriller horror.

Digital Strategy

For our trailer we decided to make a Facebook page to try and build more of a 'hype' around the trailer, and also because most trailers out there have some sort of Facebook page/ website that people can go on to find out more information, for our trailer we have been uploading things like idea's for logo, updates of what we're doing and what's been done etc. We will also put a link to the trailer on Youtube when it is finished to try and get some feedback on the trailer we have done so we can use that in our evaluation. Through the Facebook page we are using digital strategy.

Digital Strategy:

Digital Strategy is An adaptable plan that will keep us focused on our goal – no matter what happens.

There are many different types of digital strategy including:
  • Tumblr blogs
  • Facebook pages
  • Twitter
  • Websites
  • Trailers
  • Movie Posters
  • Interactive websites
Digital Strategy is useful as it gets the target audience interested in the film and creates a hype around it so that when the film finally comes out there will already be a group of people wanting to watch the film and wanting to see what happens. It's also useful as it means that a lot of the work is done for you with showing what the target audience is. All the digital strategy needs to be based on the demographic of who will be wanting to see the ilm.

The Digital Strategy is also used to blur the lines between the reality of real life and the made up fictional world of the film. It will help to create an audience who really believes what is going on in the trailer is really happening in our world. This creates a sense of excitement as it means that the audience is excited to see what is happening and what will happen in the full film.

Horror Film Magazine Articles

Here is cover for 'Hannibal' from an old Empire magazine.
The cover is dark and mysterious, as you can only see half of the characters face. The character looks evil and he is looking directly at us giving the cover image an immitating. The red eye is a very bold and noticeable colour on the cover, it is also Photoshopped or with a contact lens as no ones eye is really like that, this matches the red in the main title and the mastheads - it is very un natural and surreal and represents the characters evil nature and thirst for blood. Also the colour red usually symbolizes danger which would link as he is the killer and is there for a dangerous character.
The quote 'What's cooking' relates to the film and has a very adverse sound to it. It is written in bold white font so it contrasts with the black background making it stand out more. It also links with the film as Hannibal was a cannibal which would mean he would eat his victims thus ‘What’s cooking?’ could suggest, who are his next victims, what are his next victims like, has he killed recently etc. It would also draw in audiences who have either seen Hannibal or know about him because they will know about the cannibalism and will relate it to that. Also the fact we can only see half the face suggests he is hiding, although he is killing he also has to be in hiding.
'Bloody valentine' suggests the idea of love and death intertwined as one messed up idea. And the idea that some killers kill loved ones and relatives.

Here is a cover for Entertainment Weekly promoting the classical musical remake of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber. The film is not classed as a horror but the storyline does have a strong element of horror.

The colours on the cover blend well with each other the grey background is dull but relates to the colourless time in which the movie was set and Sweeny Todd’s emotionless attributes as he kills without seeming to feel any emotion towards them, the grey emphasis the idea of a bleak story and a bleak character with a bad past and bad present.
The masthead is in a bold blue font at the top of the page making it stand out from the dark background and catch the readers eye. The image on the front is sinister and scary - the makeup shows the character with an extremely pale face making him look drained and ghost, which seems to link with the character as he is rather like a ghost as he is there but not really noticed by many and kills without being caught. Also there is red under the eyes which makes him look more human, but tired looking, suggesting not getting much sleep and having extremely hard work. The expression on his face is menacing and angry, making the character seem like a villain - his dark hair is messy but full of volume making him seem slightly eccentric and all over the place, it also makes him seem a little like a mad scientist with the look.
His costume is very old looking reflecting the time where the film is set. He wears black showing darkness and sorrow, which is the general nature of the film. The actor name is also written in bold letters - as it is a popular actor it may encourage people to buy the magazine or see the film in which their favourite actor is starring in also he is well known for doing good films and being with Helen Bonham Carter and the films being directed by Tim Burton, the trio are seen as an extremely good group, so anyone who hears about the film will assume it is going to be extremely good.

Here is another cover of Entertainment Weekly, this time for the movie Scream 4.

This cover has been kept very simple - there is not much text, putting an increasing emphasis on the striking image. We see the mask worn by the killer in the 'Scream' franchise movies, as the movies are very popular, people will know what the film the magazine is promoting as a person wearing the trademark mask. It also suggests that the magazine knows that because of how popular the ‘Scream’ films are there isn’t really that much need to give a lot of detail on it, especially since all the films are pretty similar with the same story line and mostly the same characters.

The dark red background has a dark feel as the red could represent blood - hinting the gory nature of the ‘Scream’ films. The masthead is in bold white font across the top of the page also remaining a main focus as the magazine name. The poster focuses mainly on the film as on the right side 'Scream returns' is in large bold font and underneath is a list of the magazines content that relates to the movie being promoted, this includes interviews with the cast.

Completed Film Poster

Here is the final product, because our horror film focus on drugs and the horror of drugs we decided to have that as the focus point of our poster. The idea was that they do a lot of drugs in the film and that is what causes the deaths so we decided to put that into the poster and make it simple but at the same time show the key element of our trailer.

Creating a Film Poster

We have started to make another film poster for our horror film, here is a screen shot of the process and what we have done.

Editing Process

Here is a screen shot of the editing process so far, we have done most of the editing we just have a few extra shots to take to fill in some gaps and then clean it all up.

Film's Cool - Editing session 11/12/12

On Tuesday we went to Film's Cool where two editors came in to look at our trailers and to see what they thought we could change. After looking at our rough trailer, we where told that going more along the lines of showing the horror of death rather than the focus being on the blood and gore.

We have a scene where we walked threw the void and we where advised to use that as the drug den for our two main characters. He suggested we cut the scene up and put short scenes of our two main characters doing drugs to show what they're doing in the area. We where also advised to show a scene where the main female has blacked out due to the drugs and is being revived by her friends.

We where told to show the main characters faces over and over to create an understanding as to who the main characters are, having Eleanor and Hunter's faces flash up sweaty and happy and her two friends faces flash up worried, show the audience that Eleanor is happy with what she's doing but her friends know she needs to stop.

He also recommended that we watched 'Requiem for a Dream' as it is a film circling the effect of drugs on people and how they cope.

Make up

As we are doing a horror trailer we needed to make fake blood for the deaths, here are photos of the process of Joana and I making the fake blood and then Joana putting it on me for my character.
